Release Notes

This is a pretty close to final release. We have eliminated all of the names that ran afound of the module loading mechanism which means you no longer need to use -DisableNameChecking. This means that all you need to do to use PSCX is to execute:

Import-Module Pscx

If you want to tweak want nested modules get loaded by PSCX, copy the Pscx.UserPreferences.ps1 file to your home dir, modify to taste and then import PSCX like so:

Import-Module Pscx -arg ~\Pscx.UserPreferences.ps1

This release also has a few new commands:

Get-AlternateDataStream
Remove-AlternateDataStream
Test-AlternateDataStream
Unblock-File
Show-Tree

Note that Show-Tree is still a bit of work in progress. Works good on WSMan: drive but doesn't work worth a darn on the cert: drive. Try this from an elevated prompt:

Show-Tree WSMan: -ShowLeaf
Show-Tree hklm:\Software\Microsoft\.NETFramework -Depth 1 -ShowProperty

Also there have been some significant tweaks to the CD module and functionality. Please beat on this area and submit any issues you find.

Installation

Like Beta 1 this is an xcopy deployment. Before unzipping the download, please use Windows Explorer Properties dialog (General tab) to Unblock the zip file. After unblocking, unzip this file into your ~\Documents\WindowsPowerShell\Modules folder. Since we aren't using an MSI installer any more, if you want the Windows Explorer context menu item "Open PowerShell Here" added, execute the Enable-OpenPowerShellHere command.

The 2.0 release of PowerShell Community Extensions is completely module based and will only work on Windows PowerShell 2.0. Extract the ZIP file to your $Home\Documents\WindowsPowerShell\Modules directory. To use PSCX, add the following line to your profile (or import PSCX as needed):

Import-Module Pscx -DisableNameChecking

If you want to modify which nested modules are loaded, take a look at the Pscx.UserPreferences.ps1 file that comes with this module. You can modify that file and pass it as an argument during import e.g.:

Import-Module Pscx -arg "$home\Pscx.UserPreferences.ps1" -DisableNameChecking

Unblock the Downloaded ZIP File
When you download the ZIP file, the first thing you should do is locate the file with Windows Explorer. Then right-click on the file, select Properties and on the General tab press the "Unblock" button in the lower right corner. After doing this, go ahead and extract the files.

Read-Archive and Expand-Archive cmdlets have been added that allow ZIP and ISO files to be viewed and expanded. Support for 64-bit Windows has been improved. There are a few known issues with 64-bit support. Get-PEHeader and Test-Assembly do not work in a 64-bit process.

PowerShell 1.0
If you intend to use this with earlier versions of PowerShell v1.0, please use the MSI installer, or if you like to live on the edge or have real needs, try the CTP3 or Win7RC compatible modules as discussed below.

PowerShell 2.0
For the full Pscx experience, please use the MSI installer; however, the 1.2 release adds alpha-level support for Windows PowerShell V2 and includes two module packages as separate downloads. There is a stand-alone module package for the version shipping with Windows 7 RC, and a stand-alone module for CTP3. To install either module, simply unzip it to ~\documents\windowspowershell\modules\. Load the Pscx module by running Import-Module Pscx

Module Troubleshooting

NOTE: Modules are currently being rebuilt. Watch this space, or follow @oising on twitter.

This Win7 RC and PowerShell CTP3 modules are only alpha releases for helping those on the "bleeding edge" of PowerShell and/or Windows. As you are downloading the module from the internet, they are considered "remote" files until you "unblock" them, which is typically done by right clicking each ps1/psm1 file and clicking "unblock" on the properties sheet. You can batch unblock the files by using the "streams" tool from technet. This example will unblock all of the psm1 and ps1 script files in a single command:

C:\>  \\live.sysinternals.com\tools\streams.exe -s -d <path_to_pscx_module_folder>
