Hi guys, I've convinced a friend of mine to draw a better icon for us. Please note this is the first draft. I already told him I like non-rectangular icons more. What do you think?

I like it for the icon to use in Add/Remove programs. I don't like it so much for script files because I kind of like having the document metaphor be part of the icon. Is there a way he can merge together elements of the icon with a document image in the background?

yeah, i didnt mean it for scripts or ps1xml files. i hope he'll find time to make the document icons, too..

Perhaps a vote of some sorts. I do like what I see so far. Maybe arrange a page and spread out the images so we can pick from a #?

Somehow the new icons have some jaggies going on. The first one you posted didn't. At least that's the way they appear on my screen. Other than the jaggy issue, I like them. :-)

it seems to me the first version has the jaggy anti-aliasing as well... i'll tell him to fix it.

regarding the vote, lets call them this way:

first row (original) the 3D version would need a lot of work, and the flat ones aren't very good IMO. no vote from me.
second row (w/o background) this is the one I like the most. i'd probably try some sort of light drop shadow behind the honeycombs, and I'd like the prompt to look more like the powershell icon (skew it a bit, maybe the "wind" effect)
third row (w/background) I kind of like the left one, but not as much as the variant w/o background.

My vote... 4th over on the first row, except using the border on the left-most one on the third row.

I like the second row but like you it would be cool to see the "leaned forward" prompt. I also like the transparency around the shapes.

BTW are we going to keep the current script icon? I think we could since these are "PowerShell" scripts and not PSCX scripts.

next iteration.... http://plyshaci.cz/work/tmp/ico-verze5.gif

- i'd move the prompt more to the center of the shape
- the prompt should not be italics, the shape isn't skewed, therefore there is no reason why the content should be.
- the joint and the ends of the characters aren't round enough
- thh underbar should be shorter and the same width as the GT char
- the light source should be in the top left corner; therefore the shadow should be only visible to the right-bottom of the shape. also, the top half of the "reflection" should probably be lighter than the bottom half.
- the "wind" distortion on the left should be blue, not of the shadow color (see previous point)

apart from that, I consider it complete... do you have any other suggestions?

I concur with Jachym, specifically the italicized prompt and the light source position. MS design guidelines dictate where the shadows should be.

- the prompt location and shape is better, but it's too bold. maybe it could be moved a tiny bit to the right, especially on the small versions
- the cursor should be round like the >. and should be longer on the smaller versions
- the shadow on the largest version should be less intense
- there is no 16x16 version
- i'm not sure about the distortion of the left shape. still seems to me it does something with the shadow.

They look good to me but we will need a 16x16 icon for uninstall.
